403911_302900763095322_140647579320642_908430_2125570870_nOur featured guest was Angus S. King Jr. Angus served two four-year terms as Maine's 71st governor. He took office in 1995 as the only independent governor in the country. His 1998 reelection was one of the largest margins of victory in Maine's history. He left office in January 2003.

Governor King graduated from Dartmouth College in 1966 and earned a law degree at the University of Virginia Law School in 1969. He began his career as a staff attorney for Pine Tree Legal Assistance in Skowhegan. In 1972 he became chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics in the office of then-Senator William D. Hathaway.

In 1983 he became vice president and general counsel of Swift River-Hafslund Company, an alternative energy development company based in Portland and Boston.

In 1989 he founded and served for five years as president of Northeast Energy Management, Inc., a Brunswick-based company specializing in the development of large-scale energy conservation projects at commercial and industrial facilities in central and southern Maine.

During his term as Maine governor he focused on economic development and job creation, education, mental health services, corrections, land conservation and environmental protection, and improvements in service delivery by state government.

Governor King's administration accomplished a total rebuild of the state's mental health and corrections systems, major improvements in the state's service capability, a substantial increase in the state's commitment to research and development, the largest increase of lands in conservation in the state's history, and the nationally recognized program to provide laptop computers to every seventh and eight grade student in the state.

The Trust’s mission is to help Maine consumers save energy, save money, meet environmental goals, and stimulate the state’s economy by administering cost-effective energy efficiency and alternative energy programs.

As Dr. Northrup has championed, the "change" is not simply a collection of physical symptoms to be "fixed," but a mind-body revolution that brings the greatest opportunity for growth since adolescence. The choices a woman makes now - from the quality of her relationships to the quality of her diet - have the power to secure vibrant health and well-being for the rest of her life.
“Once you engage your own inner wisdom, you can change or improve your habits of thought, your emotions, and your behaviors… and create a more positive and joyful life experience right away,” Dr. Northrup says. “This process, when engaged in regularly, heals both your present and your future. It also enables you to live a life full of joy, meaning, and purpose—right here, right now.”

384154_267429289975803_140647579320642_813825_597555354_nOur first guest had much to say about the power of love.
Kate Braestrup is the bestselling author of Here If You Need Me and a Maine State Warden Service chaplain.
The daughter of a foreign correspondent, Kate Braestrup spent her childhood in Algiers, New York City, Paris, Bangkok, Washington, DC and Sabillasville, Maryland. She married James Andrew "Drew" Griffith in 1985. Shortly after the birth of their first child in 1986, Griffith joined the Maine State Police, and the family moved to midcoast Maine.

Educated at the Parsons School of Design/The New School and Georgetown University, Braestrup originally thought of herself primarily as a writer. She had published a novel, Onion, in 1990, after all, and occasional essays in national publications. More children arrived, but she expected to be able to continue combining motherhood and the writing of fiction and non-fiction for the foreseeable future.

Trooper Griffith was killed in a car accident while on duty in 1996. Kate Braestrup was left a widowed mother of four children between the ages of 3 and 9. Life would not and could not ever be the same as it had been.

As it happened, Drew Griffith had spent the last year of his life thinking about, researching and finally committing himself to becoming a Unitarian Universalist minister, a plan that was naturally discussed extensively with his wife. In this way, unwittingly, he had prepared the way for Kate Braestrup to recognize and develop her own vocation. She entered the Bangor Theological Seminary in 1997, and was ordained in 2004. Since 2001, she has served as chaplain to the Maine Warden Service, joining the wardens as they search the wild lands and fresh waters of Maine for those who have lost their way, and offering comfort to those who wait for the ones they love to be rescued, or for their bodies to be recovered.

In 2006, Braestrup married the artist, Simon van der Ven. Between them, van der Ven and Braestrup have a total of six children, all whom are now sauntering, tiptoeing or being pushed up to and across the threshold of adulthood.

As an ordained minister, Braestrup performs weddings, and advises individuals and couples on "how to enter into, be content within, or extract themselves from the married state." It is out of these experiences, coupled with her own, that Braestrup has written Marriage and Other Acts of Charity. With Braestrup's characteristic honesty, good humor and poignancy, it is a memoir that explores the challenging spiritual terrain of our most intimate and important human relationships.
Kate's latest book is entitled Beginner's Grace. In BEGINNER'S GRACE: Bringing Prayer to Life, Braestrup explains what prayer is and explores the many ways that we can pray. A new kind of prayer book - made for those who might not pray or even know how, Braestrup includes many examples of prayers to draw from and explains how and why the practice of prayer can open a space in our busy lives for mindfulness, gratitude, contentment, and compassion toward others.

In 2009, Richie also became known for her solid singing voice and a fantastic ability to harmonize. Rachel is nineteen-years-old.
Hallee "Xanadu" Pottle - Xan was first introduced to the mandolin at the age of ten, and since then has performed in various all-children bluegrass bands such as Into The Blue, a group of 13+ talented children. Xan has been singing with her sister and cousins for many years with dreams of someday touring the country. Hallee is fifteen.
Katie Pottle is thirteen-years-old. She sings and plays the ukelele.

Joy: Dr. Lisa # 14

~~~~~
This week our "Wellness Innovations" segment, sponsored by the University of New England, is about laughter and health. According to The New York Times Health Page,
Laughter is regularly promoted as a source of health and well being, but it has been hard to pin down exactly why laughing until it hurts feels so good.
The answer, reports Robin Dunbar, an evolutionary psychologist at Oxford, is not the intellectual pleasure of cerebral humor, but the physical act of laughing. The simple muscular exertions involved in producing the familiar ha, ha, ha, he said, trigger an increase in endorphins, the brain chemicals known for their feel-good effect.
Our suggestion? Put those endorphins in play and test the laughter hypothesis for yourself this holiday season!
This week our "Wellness Innovations" segment, sponsored by the University of New England, is about spirituality and health. According to familydoctor.org,
Research shows that things such as positive beliefs, comfort and strength gained from religion, meditation and prayer can contribute to healing and a sense of well being. Improving your spiritual health may not cure an illness, but it may help you feel better, prevent some health problems and help you cope with illness, stress or death.
The show began with our "Deep Dish" foods segment, co-hosted by Maine Magazine wellness editor, Genevieve Morgan. Our conversation centered on the ways we feed ourselves, physically and emotionally. This week on our "Wellness Innovations" segment, sponsored by the University of New England, was about "The Neuroscience of Why Gratitude Makes Us Healthier," by Ocean Robbins:
Negative attitudes are bad for you. And gratitude, it turns out, makes you happier and healthier. If you invest in a way of seeing the world that is mean and frustrated, you’re going to get a world that is more mean and frustrating. But if you can find any authentic reason to give thanks, anything that is going right with the world or your life, and put your attention there, then statistics say you’re going to be better off.
There’s an old saying that if you’ve forgotten the language of gratitude, you’ll never be on speaking terms with happiness. This isn’t just happy talk, it turns out. Your brain knows the difference. Several studies have shown depression to be inversely correlated to gratitude. It seems that the more grateful a person is, the less depressed they are. Philip Watkins, a clinical psychologist at Eastern Washington University, found that clinically depressed individuals showed significantly lower gratitude (nearly 50 percent less) than non-depressed controls.
389926_259304460788286_140647579320642_791908_1403603063_n-1The first guest on today's show was Jill McGowan, Clothing Designer, of Jill McGowan Inc.
The first line of clothing from Jill McGowan, Inc. was a series of white shirts. This line was inspired by her work as a patternmaker in the men’s shirt industry. After comparing her work on men’s shirts to women’s clothing of equal price, she realized the genuine need to improve the standard of women’s clothing.
Jill’s shirts and seasonal collections are now available in over 300 speciality stores around the country and her work has been featured in several publications including Women’s Wear Daily, Harper’s Bazaar, the New York Times, Victoria, Real Simple, Rescue and More magazines, and the online fashion site: Daily Candy, Maine Magazine, Down East and the Boston Globe.
Jill has appeared on The Martha Stewart Show and Martha has blogged about her visit to the studio. Her shirts have been worn in many feature length films, and the television shows SportsNight, What Not To Wear and Martha Stewart. Jill McGowan was selected as one of the fashion innovators for the television show, Main Floor, sponsored by Cotton, Inc.
Jill McGowan Retail, the company’s flagship store, opened in November 2010 in Freeport Maine.
This week on our "Wellness Innovations" segment, sponsored by the University of New England, we discussed an upcoming event that addresses health from a global standpoint: a talk entitled "Arab Spring, American Winter," given by MIT Professor and linguist Noam Chomsky.
"While the peoples of the Middle East are demanding the right to good education, health, and employment, Americans, battered by an economic system that eludes most people's grasp, seem to be resigned to a future without such rights.  Professor Chomsky reflects on this irony."
This event will be held on Monday, December 12 at 6 pm, at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center. For more information or to RSVP, click here.
The REEL Project a multifaceted organization. Their first mandate is to produce humanitarian films for various populations in need in post-conflict areas of the developing world. They work towards creating culturally relevant films that not only provide information, but that are also engaging works of art. When they come across a population in need of some type of vital information, whether it is news about a refugee repatriation process, or messages from family and friends separated by war, they help to provide that information. The REEL Project works both independently and in partnerships with other international and local organizations on the ground. In addition to their use of media for humanitarian purposes, they work to support the creative ideas, educational initiatives, and business aspirations of local people in the communities where we film. Their second mandate is thus to assist such communities through the provision of various loans and grants, and through the facilitation of international partnerships, connections and opportunities that promote local development.
